Margaritas, Memories & a Gulf Coast Legend: Celebrate Jimmy Buffett’s Legacy in Mobile

There are few artists whose music feels as much like the Gulf Coast as Jimmy Buffett. His songs captured the salt air, the water, the characters, the adventures and that laid-back way of life that those of us along the Gulf know so well.

This September, Buffett’s story is coming home to Mobile in a big way.

The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf is celebrating the grand opening of the new permanent Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience on September 12, 2026. And the night before the doors officially open, two of Buffett’s longtime musical friends and collaborators will help kick off the celebration with Margaritas & Memories featuring Mac McAnally and Scotty Emerick at Mobile’s historic Saenger Theatre.

For Jimmy Buffett fans, Parrot Heads and anyone who loves the music and culture of the Gulf Coast, this is one September weekend worth making the trip to Mobile for.

Margaritas & Memories: A Night of Music and Stories

The celebration begins Friday, September 11 at 7:30 PM at the Saenger Theatre with Margaritas & Memories, featuring Mac McAnally and Scotty Emerick. This isn't simply another tribute concert. McAnally was a longtime member of Buffett's Coral Reefer Band and one of his closest musical collaborators. Joined by acclaimed songwriter Scotty Emerick, the evening will celebrate Buffett through the songs, stories and memories that made his music mean so much to generations of fans. Guests can expect Buffett favorites alongside the kind of storytelling that can only come from musicians who shared stages, songs and years of friendship with him. Even better, proceeds from the concert directly benefit the new Jimmy Buffett Experience at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf. For Gulf Coast music fans, it's hard to imagine a more fitting way to begin the weekend.

The Jimmy Buffett Experience Opens September 12

The following morning, the celebration moves to Mobile's waterfront for the grand opening of Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience. The new permanent exhibition occupies 6,000 square feet across two levels of the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf and was designed as an immersive celebration of Buffett's music, adventures, stories and unmistakable Gulf Coast spirit.  And Mobile is exactly where this story belongs. Long before Margaritaville became a household name, Buffett's life was rooted along the Gulf Coast. The exhibition explores those beginnings and follows his journey from growing up in Mobile to becoming a songwriter, musician, adventurer and cultural icon whose music inspired millions of people to embrace a little more fun and adventure in life.

More Than a Museum Exhibit

This isn't a collection of memorabilia sitting behind glass. The experience includes more than 130 artifacts from Buffett's life, many of which have never been publicly displayed, along with never-before-seen concert footage and photographs. Visitors will find handwritten lyrics, instruments, clothing, personal memorabilia, exclusive interviews and recordings throughout the exhibition. There's even an immersive concert theater designed to recreate the feeling of being front row at a Buffett show. The exhibit also digs deeper into the Gulf Coast itself — the waters, people and places that shaped Buffett and ultimately found their way into the stories he told through his music. For longtime fans, it's an opportunity to discover pieces of Jimmy's story they may have never known. For newer fans, it's a chance to understand how a kid with Gulf Coast roots created an entire lifestyle around music, adventure, friendship and finding joy in the journey.

Make a Weekend of It

The celebration actually begins before Friday night's concert. On Thursday, September 10 at 9 AM, the museum will unveil a new larger-than-life bronze Jimmy Buffett sculpture by artist Ben Victor on the waterfront. Then comes Margaritas & Memories Friday night, followed by the official grand opening Saturday. Opening day festivities on September 12 include a ribbon cutting, live music, food trucks, family activities, photo opportunities and a mural festival. The celebration continues Sunday with more live music, food trucks and activities. The museum will also begin new hours following the opening, welcoming visitors Wednesday through Sunday from 10 AM–4 PM. Adult admission is $19 and includes both the Jimmy Buffett exhibition and general museum admission. Advance tickets are currently available.

A Gulf Coast Story Comes Home

Jimmy Buffett's influence stretches around the world, but his story will always have a special connection to the Gulf Coast. That's what makes this opening so meaningful. This isn't simply about celebrating an artist who gave us songs we love. It's about celebrating the places, people, waterways and way of life that helped inspire them. For those of us along the Gulf Coast, Buffett's music has long been part of the soundtrack. It's playing on boats, at beach bars, on porches and docks, and during those afternoons when nobody is particularly concerned about what time it is. Now there is a permanent place dedicated to telling the story behind it all. So grab your fellow Parrot Heads and head west to Mobile for a weekend filled with margaritas, memories, music and one legendary Son of a Son of a Sailor.
