Every Room in the Iconic Bar Was SRO as Fans Watched on Massive Video Screens

PERDIDO KEY, Fla. -- Orders from Waffle House were arriving curbside before 6 a.m. as No Shoes Nation lined up, hoping to just get inside the sprawling Flora-Bama Lounge, Package Store & Oyster Bar. While only 388 would cram into the Dome with decades of bras hanging from the ceiling, even proximity to Kenny Chesney’s freewheeling romp across ten years of No Shoes Radio on SiriusXM was enough to draw hundreds of people before daybreak.

By the time the East Tennessee songwriter/superstar took the stage with a 1, 2 sweep of “Get Along” and anthemic “Flora-Bama,” the crowd was singing as loud as the band – and a clearly emotional Chesney announced, “thank you is a word you’re going to hear a lot,” it was clear this set was going to distill all the joy, all the freedom and all the revelry that has defined No Shoes Nation, “a concertgoing community rivaled perhaps only by Parrotheads and Deadheads” according to Variety.

With a summer residency at Sphere in Vegas, FloraBama was the moment where Chesney could have fun with the music, veer from the set list – “The Good Stuff” after asking for the key, a forgotten, but obvious “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems” and a lost-in-it version of George Strait’s “Carried Away” – and also dial up the sing-alongs, the positive energy and life affirming truths with the rarely played “Guitars and Tiki Bars,” Chris Stapleton’s “Never Wanted Nothing More” and the put it aside make the moment “Save It For A Rainy Day.”

By the time a particularly robust “When The Sun Goes Down” was headed to the final verse, bombshell writer/superstar-in-the-making Megan Moroney rolled onstage in a grey No Shoes Nation “corset,” and picked up the chorus. After telling the live audience and everyone listening on SiriusXM Channel 59 the story of their friendship, mutual admiration and adventures, Rosie & The Revival swooped into Moroney’s “You Had To Be There.”

Announcing Megan had just joined the band, the pair shared the smoky “You & Tequila,” a song of knowing better and somehow giving in. That ability to make intimacy massive had defined earlier performances of “Island Boy,” sent out to Boat Captain Ben in Maine, a surging “When I See This Bar” dedicated to FloraBama pirate/poet Jimmy Lewis, and a jubilant “Three Little Birds” for good friend Ziggy Marley and the entire Marley family that led into the tropical “Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven” that felt like personal witness.

“Some days, the songs are just bigger than you are, and they take you where they and the people want to be,” Chesney said of the show. “It was so alive, so free and we were all so glad to be together playing, being with the people, that energy took over everything. Whether it was up tempo or thoughtful, talking or laughing, it reminds me why music is the most powerful force to bring us together.”

Indeed, the turbo-shanty “Pirate Flag” came with all the swagger and bravado required; right down to a woman dressed in full wench regalia in the sweltering crowd. For a band built to rock, they kicked things into another gear. But “American Kids,” which closed the 90 minutes, delivered the loudest, biggest cheers and rush of what a great band can do.

“It’s crazy: people more on fire at the end than the beginning,” Chesney marveled. “When we hit that intro, you could feel the energy double and slam right into us. Talk about a wild ride! It’s the exact reason we do this, and the reason we can’t get to Vegas soon enough.

“I’ve lived a lot of life on No Shoes Radio. I am so grateful to SiriusXM for taking what we do and amplifying it all over the world. A whole lot has happened over the last ten years, and because of them, we’ve been able to live it with everyone who loves these songs.”

From Table to Tide: Celebrating 29 Million Oyster Shells Recycled in Alabama

There’s something special about enjoying fresh Gulf oysters along the Alabama coast. But what happens after the last shell is emptied?

Thanks to the Oyster Shell Recycling Program, those shells are getting a second life—and making a massive impact.

Today, we’re proud to celebrate a major milestone: Over 29 million oyster shells collected and recycled across Alabama.

What Is the Oyster Shell Recycling Program?

Launched in 2016 by the Alabama Coastal Foundation, the Oyster Shell Recycling Program partners with local restaurants to collect used oyster shells and return them to Alabama waters.

Instead of ending up in landfills, these shells are:

Collected from participating restaurants
Cleaned and cured over time
Placed back into coastal waters to help form new oyster reefs

This simple but powerful process helps:

Grow new oysters
Improve water quality
Provide habitat for marine life
Reduce shoreline erosion

Why Oyster Shells Matter

Oyster shells aren’t just waste—they’re essential to the ecosystem. Baby oysters naturally attach to existing shells to grow. Without them, rebuilding reefs becomes much more difficult.

Kenny Chesney is coming back to Flora-Bama

SiriusXM today announced country music icon Kenny Chesney will deliver an exclusive SiriusXM concert at the equally iconic beach bar, Flora-Bama, located where the two states meet at Orange Beach, Alabama and Perdido Key, Florida line. The Saturday, April 18 show is a special performance to celebrate 10 years of Chesney’s exclusive SiriusXM channel, No Shoes Radio.

The intimate show will feature the 2025 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee and Billboard’s No. 1 Country Artist of the Century performing some of his biggest hits, possible surprises and songs that have defined his singular career, including “American Kids,” “When The Sun Goes Down,” “Get Along,” “You & Tequila” and more. SiriusXM listeners across North America will be able to experience Kenny Chesney’s freewheeling performance on SiriusXM’s No Shoes Radio on Saturday, April 18 at 3:00 pm ET and will be available on the SiriusXM app.

Flora-Bama's Beach Walk/Run for America's Warriors Raises $16,000 for Special Operations Warrior Foundation

Walking for a cause and honoring the fallen.

On March 14th, the Flora-Bama community came together once again for a powerful cause at the annual Beach Walk Run for America’s Warriors 5K and Half Marathon. With the Gulf breeze at our backs and purpose in every step, participants ran and walked in honor of the brave men and women who have sacrificed everything for our country.

This year’s event was a tremendous success, raising $16,000, with 100% of registration fees directly benefiting the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. This incredible organization provides full college scholarships and educational support to the children of fallen special operations personnel, ensuring their families are cared for long after the sacrifice has been made.

Honoring a True American Hero

Each year, we take time to recognize a fallen hero and the family they left behind—families who have been supported by the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. This year, we proudly honored Master Sergeant George “Andy” Fernandez, who made the ultimate sacrifice on April 2, 2003, during combat operations in northern Iraq. A native of El Paso, Texas, MSG Fernandez served with the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment and was later selected for a U.S. Army Special Mission Unit. He was the Unit’s first casualty of the Iraq War. For his bravery and service, he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge.

His legacy lives on through his family and through the continued support of organizations like the Special Operations Warrior Foundation—and events like this one.

The Beach Walk Run is more than just a race—it’s a reflection of what Flora-Bama stands for. Supporting our military and giving back to those who sacrifice so much is at the heart of our mission. From seasoned runners tackling the half marathon to families walking the 5K together, every participant played a role in making a difference. $24,000 Raised for American Cancer Society

Flora-Bama’s 32nd Annual Super Chili Bowl Cook-Off brought the heat for a great cause on Saturday, February 7, raising $24,000 in support of the American Cancer Society. Eighteen teams fired up their burners and served up their best recipes as guests enjoyed unlimited chili tastings throughout the day. The annual event, a longtime Flora-Bama tradition, combines friendly competition, community spirit, and charitable giving — all while supporting the American Cancer Society’s mission to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, ensuring everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

Teams competed for top honors including First Place, Second Place, Third Place, People’s Choice, and Best Decorated Booth. Attendees sampled a wide variety of flavors and styles, casting their votes for their favorites while enjoying live entertainment and the vibrant atmosphere that makes Flora-Bama events so memorable. “We are incredibly grateful to our participating teams, guests, sponsors, and staff who made this year’s cook-off such a success,” said Flora-Bama Marketing Director, Jenifer Parnell. “For 32 years, this event has showcased the generosity of our community while helping make a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer.” Funds raised from the Super Chili Bowl Cook-Off will help the American Cancer Society continue its vital work in funding groundbreaking research, providing free resources and support to patients and caregivers, and advocating for policies that improve cancer prevention and care.

There is no better way to wash away the old year and dive headfirst into the new one than the Flora-Bama Polar Bear Dip. On January 1st, we celebrated our 42nd year of this iconic Gulf Coast tradition, and it might just have been our best one yet!

If you missed out—or if you’re currently thawing out and want to relive the magic—here is the breakdown of how we kicked off 2026.

Perfect Weather for a Plunge

Mother Nature must be a fan of the "Bama." While many Polar Bear Dips across the country involve literal ice, Orange Beach treated us to perfect conditions. With sunny skies and temperatures hovering in the mid-60s, the Gulf of America was calling. The beautiful weather drew a massive crowd of thousands, stretching across the sugar-white sand as far as the eye could see.

Costumes, Characters, and Family Fun

The Polar Bear Dip is more than just a swim; it’s a parade of creativity. This year, the costumes were next-level! From full-sized polar bear suits and sparkly mermaids to entire families dressed as superheroes, the beach was a sea of color. It remains one of our favorite family-friendly days of the year, where kids and "grown-ups" alike get to be a little bit wild.

The "Full Submersion" Reward

At exactly high noon, the whistle blew, and a wave of thousands of brave souls charged into the Gulf. The rule is simple: get your head under water, and you earn the ultimate New Year’s bragging rights.

Once the "dippers" emerged dripping wet and shivering (just a little!), they were treated to the traditional Flora-Bama hospitality:

A Free Draft Beer: To toast to the new year.
The Traditional Feast: A free plate of ham, black-eyed peas (for luck!), and collard greens (for money!).

Music That Never Misses a Beat

While the dip happened at noon, the party started long before the sun was high. Live music kicked off inside the bar at 9:00 AM, setting the energy for the day. Whether you were warming up before the plunge or dancing in your damp costume afterward, the tunes kept rolling across all our stages and continued well into the night.

It's official, we've just been announced that Brian Kelley , the Florida half of the iconic country duo Florida-Georgia Line, is bringing his tour to the legendary venue. Mark your calendars for Thursday, August 29th at 8 PM for what is sure to be an unforgettable night of music.

This is a non-ticketed event, which means you won't need to purchase a special ticket in advance. Just show up, and the normal Flora-Bama door cover applies. Please note that this is an 18+ event. Come early and enjoy music on all of our stages, grab some grub at Flora-Bama Oyster Bar and throw back a few bushwackers to get ready for a night full of fun.

Brian Kelley is a force to be reckoned with in the country music world. The Flora-Bama’s electric ode to the famous Woodstock, Sandstock, is back Saturday, August 9! Wear your chosen colorful hippie attire and join us on the line for a day full of the 60s. From the music to the food, and our staff, we’re embracing the laid-back and timeless era of Woodstock.

Flora-Bama partner, Pat McClellan, thought of the idea for this groovy party. McClellan told us,

“Seeing people of all ages dress and enjoy the music from those days is great” as he is excited

about what his goal has turned into. It began with a small gathering honoring the anniversary of

Woodstock and has blossomed into a time-machine beach party where music and nostalgia

collide.

We will have live music inspired from the free-spirited age of Woodstock on our stages all day!

Wear your favorite flower crown and bring friends and family of all ages to listen to some of the

Flora-Bama’s best 60s inspired music. We will have live music featuring musicians: Emily White, Burnt Peaches, Veronica Jean Trio, Trevor Finlay, Kyle Brady, Brittany Bell, Shoal Nuff Band, Chris Beverly, Ryan Balthrop, Al & Kathy, Sugarcane Jane, Spencer Maige & The Reckless/Ryan Dyer Band, Justin Fobes, Slide Bayou, Lauren Murphy, and Pop Fiction.

12th Annual Bulls on the Beach Returns to Flora-Bama

Get ready for one of the most thrilling events on the Gulf Coast as Flora-Bama’s 12th annual

Bulls on the Beach is back the weekend of September 4th —September 6th ! Imagine the

excitement of a country rodeo set against the backdrop of a waterfront sunset. Spectators from all around the country and of all ages come to gather on the line for this one-of-a-kind event. Plus,

with live music, delicious food and drinks, and the rodeo, you’re in for a full weekend of fun.

Bulls on the Beach at the Flora-Bama is a professional bull riding extravaganza that transforms

our beloved beach into a full-blown rodeo arena. Flora-Bama doors will open at 5 PM, and rodeo

gates will open at 6 PM each day of the event for any early birds who want to come eat and drink

before the fun starts. The rodeo will begin at 8 PM every night. For an exciting addition, a

portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

to help fight the battle against childhood cancer. Further, we are hosting Kids’ Night on

Thursday, September 4th !

On Thursday night, kids 12 and under can participate in our Coloring Contest Bike Giveaway,

where one little boy and girl will each take home a free bike. How does it work? Print out one of

the coloring pages, let your kid get creative, and bring the coloring sheet to the Flora-Bama the

night of Thursday, September 4th , to give to a designated door staff employee when you arrive.

Turn your coloring sheet in by 8PM Thursday to be entered to win a free bike.

Surprise! The Flora-Bama is bringing themed nights to Bulls on the Beach. On Thursday,

September 4th , wear your best boots, pearl snaps, and shiny rhinestones for a classy night at the

rodeo. And Friday, September 5 th , embrace the beach and come dressed in your vibrant Hawaiian gear for COWabunga night! To finish the weekend, we’re ending the best way we know how, by honoring the land of the free and home of the brave. On Saturday, September 6 th , wear your stars and stripes as patriotic attire is highly encouraged.

Tickets are on sale now HERE ! Get them fast as Bulls on the Beach is one of Flora-Bama’s most

anticipated events of the year. Tickets are sold individually for each night, and there are no 3-day

tickets. Kids ages 7-17 tickets are on sale for $20, and adult tickets for those 18+ are $40. Children 6 and under are admitted to this event free of charge. We are not issuing refunds for tickets. Also, seating at Bulls on the Beach is bleacher seating, which first-come, first-served. If you require ADA seating, please contact our event team prior to the event at events@florabama.com.

We have a couple of recommendations for those attending Bulls on the Beach this year. Parking is extremely limited on property, so we suggest arriving early to ensure a good parking spot. In addition, buy your Bulls on the Beach t-shirt in the Flora-Bama Gift Shop to remember this weekend for many years to come. Shirts will be available closer to the event!

Red, White, and Fun! Flora-Bama’s Freedom Run Hits the Sand

Flora-Bama's Freedom Run July 4th Weekend

Get ready to trade in your flip-flops for running shoes and celebrate America’s independence at the annual Flora-Bama Freedom Run! Come join us for a family friendly event available to those of all ages and different athletic abilities. Our patriotic run will feature two courses: the 4-mile run/walk or the 1-mile fun run/walk, and for an added bonus, the first 400 participants registered are guaranteed a free race t-shirt. There will also be patriotic party favors for runners while

supplies last!

Participants are encouraged to sign up on our registration page as soon as now, but can register as late as the day of the event, Saturday, July 5th. What can competitors win? The first 400 finishers will receive a finishers medal! Medals will also be awarded to 1st , 2nd , and 3rd place in all age groups for the 4-mile run, and 1st place will be awarded to both male and female in all age groups for the 4-mile walk. But that’s not all…surprise plaques will be given out to Overall Male and Female runners and walkers.

Packet pickup for the race will be held on Friday, July 4th, at the Flora-Bama tent stage from 4 PM - 6 PM. Does your family need somewhere to see 4th of July fireworks? The Flora-Bama is hosting a fireworks show at 9 PM on Friday if runners want to stay after packet pickup for delightful drinks, fun food, and patriotic vibes. We highly encourage those competing to pick up their packet on July 4th to prevent long wait times on Saturday morning. If you cannot pick up your packet on Friday, July 4th, packet pickup

will also be available the day of the race, Saturday, July 5th, from 6 AM - 7:30 AM in the Flora-Bama tent.

After the race, the Flora-Bama is hosting a post-race party in the tent. Wear your patriotic outfits and bring the American spirit! The celebration will feature live music from musician Wes Loper and those who competed will also receive a complimentary breakfast buffet with draft beer or non-alcoholic beverages. You thought you knew Flora-Bama? Think again. We're rolling out something new and delicious, alongside daily activities that promise fun for everyone. Come play Music Bingo, the Flora-Bama’s special twist on the game of bingo, every Friday, from 1 PM – 4PM with the one and only Rhonda Hart. This isn’t just your average game of bingo. This is bingo with a musical spin, waterfront views and it’s FREE to play!

How does it work? The rules are simple, just like regular bingo, but instead of B-I-N-G-O the card reads different songs and artists from famous musicians of different generations. Bingo cards range from 70s, 80s, 90s country, and surprise eras. Snippets of songs are played, and you can mark them down to get bingo!

But there’s more than just exciting games, the Flora-Bama Oyster Bar has many appetizing bites to snack on while you’re playing. Try some of our mouthwatering Blue Chair Bay Shrimp Tacos which have deep fried shrimp tossed in our signature Blue Chair Bay key lime sauce, served on a toasted flour shell with lettuce, pico de gallo, and sour cream.

Are you more interested in food raised on land rather than in the sea? Order our Flora-Bama Birria Bites that have slow-braised, spice-marinated beef birria and melted pepper jack cheese wrapped in a crispy flour tortilla. It’s also served with a warm classic queso for dipping.

The Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo is Casting Off at the State Line!

The "funnest" fishing tournament on the Gulf Coast

Come make fun-filled memories with your family and friends at the Flora-Bama’s 11 ^th annual Fishing Rodeo! With over 30 categories for young and older anglers alike, there is an opportunity for everyone to have fun. From swapping stories with boat captains about their catch to families cheering on kids at the weigh station, this is weekend reminds us why we love the water and the people who call it home at the Flora-Bama.

The rodeo opens Friday, June 6 ^th , at midnight and will close Saturday, June 7 ^th at 7 PM. Weigh stations for competitors’ fish hauls will be open from 2 – 7 PM at the Ole River Grill Beach Area on June 6 ^th and 7 ^th . However, you must be in line by 7 PM, June 7 ^th , to weigh in your fresh catch and compete (late submissions after that time will not be accepted).

Whether you want to take your kid out behind the Flora-Bama Yacht Club to fish for pinfish and blue crab or go out on a boat to catch some red snapper or king mackerel there is a division for all fishermen at this event. Not competing and want to come support your angler? Or want to come watch unbelievable fresh catches brought in from our waterfront views? Come eat and drink at the Flora-Bama Ole River Grill or the Flora-Bama Yacht Club for a relaxing and enjoyable day in the sun. On Friday, musician Chris Beverly will take on the Flora-Bama Yacht Club stage early, and musician Ryan Dyer will close out the night. Also on Friday, at the Flora-Bama Ole River Grill, musician Tyler Ward will be on stage to deliver nostalgic tunes after the weigh-in closes at 7 PM. Also, there will be live music on Saturday at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club from Smokey Otis Duo early and Brooks Johnson later. The Flora-Bama Ole River Grill will also host Ryan Balthrop Saturday evening as well.

If you want to eat something delicious while you unwind and watch the boats, drive in, pair a legendary Flora-Bama Bushwacker with our Gulf Coast Blue Crab Claws. These notable crab claws can be served two ways: fried or sautéed in our New Orleans BBQ butter. Either way they are a perfect pairing for a breezy day on the water!

Our Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo weekend will end with an awards ceremony at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club on Sunday, June 8 ^th at 11 AM to celebrate our winners. You never know who you'll see at the Flora-Bama...

Gulf Shores, Alabama hosted it's first annual Sand in my Boots festival last weekend May 16th - 18th, presented by Morgan Wallen with headliners Post Malone, Brooks & Dunn, and Wallen closing out the festival Sunday night. The three day festival had thousands of people in town excited for this beach event filled with three days of country, rock, and rap artists. Festival goers came by Flora-Bama to continue their celebration and in hopes of possibly seeing some of the country artists up close in person. You never know who you may see at Flora-Bama, right? Well the crowd wasn't disappointed with guests like Chandler Walters, Riley Green, Randy Houser, Jake Worthington, and Bailey Zimmerman to name a few.

Other artists from the lineup from Sand in my Boots festival included: Diplo, HARDY, Chase Rice, ERNEST, Ian Munsick, Nate Smith, Ella Langley, Paul Cauthen, Kameron Marlowe, Josh Ross, Morgan Wade, Hailey Whitters, Lauren Watkins, John Morgan and Laci Kaye Booth. The lineup also featured hip-hop luminaries T-Pain, Wiz Khalifa, 2 Chainz, Three 6 Mafia, Moneybagg Yo, and BigXthaPlug, plus indie alternative bands including The War on Drugs, 3 Doors Down, Future Islands, Real Estate, Wild Nothing, and more – all hand-picked from Wallen’s personal playlist.

Celebrate Memorial Day On the Line

Flora-Bama is the place to be this Memorial Day weekend.

Come celebrate Memorial Day weekend on the line this Saturday, May 24th to honor those men and women

who have graciously served our country. There’s no better place to gather in gratitude than right

here—on the line between Florida and Alabama—where the beach meets the beat of live music,

community, and celebration. The weekend kicks off with the Gulf Coast Silkies Ruck March which begins at The Wharf in Orange Beach and ends on the gorgeous beach behind the Flora-Bama. This organization plans networking hikes for veterans, active, and guard personnel, with the intent to strengthen the veteran community through networking to eliminate suicide in their ranks. Arrival time is around 12:30pm, depending on numerous conditions, but come join us on the beach to cheer on and welcome these brave men and women as they finalize their ruck.

Wondering what to eat this weekend with beautiful waterfront views and bushwhackers? The

Flora-Bama Oyster Bar has many delicious options, from oysters to shrimp. Our golden fried

shrimp comes with flavorful cocktail sauce, and our oyster’s range in sizes of half dozen to a full

dozen. One special order of oysters is named after a legendary owner, Pat McClellan. McClellan serves

his oysters baked and topped with butter, smoked gouda cheese, bacon, and green onions. Don’t

like those? We have an entire oyster sampler with a flavor for everyone or try some of

our scrumptious smoked tuna dip. Chefs make this dip fresh and in-house with brined Gulf Coast

tuna, slow smoked and served with a fiery blend of Alabama style flavors with a side of saltine

crackers.

We're letting it all fly..... with 30,000 of your best friends

The greatest weekend of the year is nearing, the iconic, the one and only, the Gulf coast's greatest beach party...MULLET TOSS! Always the last full weekend of April, this event brings in thousands of people to celebrate together and that's right, toss fish. Patrons gather around a 200 foot long course to watch participants sign up to grab a mullet and throw it as far as you can. The contest is simple, but the weekend is anything but..... think a three day long party filled with sunshine, sand, cocktails (bushwackers of course), live music, bikini and hot body contests, debauchery and oh the lifelong memories you'll never forget, or maybe you will.

Leading up to the event, Flora-Bama has a jam-packed schedule of events for April, offering something for everyone in the community and visitors alike. Join us for a month of fun, fitness, and festivities on the beautiful Gulf Coast!

Kicking off the month is the Mullet Man Triathlon on Saturday, April 12th. Participants will start at 7am with a 1/4 mile swim in Ole River behind the Flora-Bama Yacht Club & Ole River Grill. The 16.5-mile bike segment follows, transitioning from the Flora-Bama Liquor Store parking lot, heading west to Alabama, under the Perdido Pass Bridge, then east into Florida on Perdido Key Dr. Cyclists will follow the road, turn left onto River Road, go under the Theo Baars Bridge, return onto Perdido Key Drive, and finish back at the Liquor Store. Bike helmets are required, and participants must walk their bikes through the transition area. The event concludes with a 3.9-mile run starting at the Liquor Store, heading west into Alabama, turning around under the Perdido Pass Bridge, and finishing in front of the Flora-Bama on the south side of Perdido Key Drive. An awards ceremony with food, drinks, and live music by Al & Cathy immediately follows the completion of the race.

The following weekend, on Saturday, April 19th, families are invited to our free annual Bunny Drop & Easter Egg Hunt, promising a fun-filled afternoon for children of all ages. Join us for a morning of arts and crafts with live music by Wes Loper starting at 11am, followed by an exciting Easter Egg Hunt where kids can search for over 10,000 colorful eggs hidden in the sand behind Flora-Bama at 12pm. Remember to bring your own Easter basket to load up all your eggs. The highlight of the day will be the arrival of the Easter Bunny, who will be parachuting onto the beach promptly at 12:30pm! Immediately following the Easter Bunny’s safe landing, kids will have the opportunity to meet and take photos with the bunny.

The following day, April 20th, join us for our uplifting Worship on the Water church services, a beautiful way to celebrate Easter Sunday with the community. Three services are offered on Easter Sunday starting with the sunrise service at 6am and then the usual 9am and 11am. Thousands attend these services hosted on the sand behind Flora-Bama with a gorgeous serene Gulf view.

Finally, the month culminates with the legendary Interstate Mullet Toss and Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party from April 25th to 27th. This iconic three-day event draws participants and spectators from around the world to see who can throw a mullet fish the farthest from Florida towards the Alabama state line. This unique and quirky competition is a spectacle you won't want to miss!

Mullet Toss, cover charge to Flora-Bama begins at 9am Fri-Sun, $10/day for 21 and up & $15 for 16-20 year olds, 15 & under are free, all ages until 6pm, then 21 and up. Flora-Bama membership cards are good for entry to Flora-Bama all weekend for Mullet Toss. It is $20 to toss a mullet and all tossers receive a t-shirt, then Flora-Bama donates the proceeds to local charities. This three-day party includes live music all weekend and bikini and hot body contests on Friday and Saturday. Come be a part of the Gulf Coast’s greatest beach party.

Information Regarding Mullet Toss:

Chairs around the Mullet Toss will be free and there will be areas blocked off for standing room.
Personal beach chairs are allowed on the Flora-Bama beach, but tents and umbrellas are prohibited. Space is first come, first served.
No outside coolers or alcohol can be brought onto Flora-Bama’s licensed property. The Flora-Bama will have multiple bars on the beach selling drinks and plenty available inside the bar.
Parking on Flora-Bama property is free, however extremely limited. We encourage the use of taxis, rideshare apps and carpooling. Any vehicles left overnight will be towed at the owner’s expense.
The Flora-Bama beach is open to the public, however, to enter the Flora-Bama you must purchase a wristband. Entry can be accessed via the Flora-Bama beach as well as the main entrance on Perdido Key Drive.
As always, you must be 21 to drink. Patrons must have a valid ID that will be checked upon entry.
Cover charge to Flora-Bama begins at 9 am Fri-Sun, $10/day for 21 and up, $15 for 16–20-year-olds, and 15 -under are free. All ages are welcome until 6 pm, then 21 and up only.
Flora-Bama Membership cards are good for free entry to Flora-Bama for Mullet Toss.
Tossing of the mullet is 10 am to 4 pm Friday through Sunday, with kids toss at 10 am and adults beginning at noon until 4 pm, kids finals at 2 pm, owners & celebrity tossers at 4 pm, then finals each day at 4:30 pm. It is $20 to toss a mullet and all tossers receive a t-shirt. Proceeds go to local charities.

Information Regarding Phoenix X & Tent Rentals:

Access to the Phoenix X condo building & property will be limited to Phoenix X residents and renters. Wristbands will be issued upon check in.
Only Phoenix X residents & renters can park at the Phoenix X parking garage and must have a parking pass. Renters will receive their parking pass upon check in.
Tent space rentals on the beach behind the Phoenix X are available for rent ONLY for those who are renting at the Phoenix X for Mullet Toss weekend or owners at the Phoenix X. Please contact Ike’s Beach Service at 251-948-3757 to rent a tent or for any questions.
Coolers are ONLY allowed in the Phoenix X beach area if you are an owner of a Phoenix X unit or have rented a Phoenix X condo for the weekend. Outside guests will not be permitted on Phoenix X property with coolers.
Flora-Bama wristbands will allow access into the Phoenix X beach area for foot traffic only. You may not bring coolers into this area with this wristband.
Amplified music is prohibited on Phoenix X beach. No large speakers or DJ’s. The Flora-Bama will be providing music on the beach for this area.

Craig Campbell Performs Charity Show for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

95KSJ presented another St. Jude concert with country artist Craig Campbell on the Flora-Bama Tent Stage, Saturday, April 5th! What an incredible night of live music, while supporting a great cause. With 100% of ticket sales going directly to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , we raised a little over $7000 for the kids of St. Jude, helping aid in the cure of childhood cancer. The crowd sang along to Campbell's hits "Outskirts of Heaven", "Keep Them Kisses Comin", and "Fish". Thank you to everyone who cam out to support!

Friday, February 14 ^th and Saturday, February 15th from 10am – 4pm, Flora-Bama will be hosting a job fair seeking to hire more than 200 positions across their five businesses: Flora-Bama, Flora-Bama Liquor & Lotto, Flora-Bama Yacht Club, Flora-Bama Ole River Grill, & Flora-Bama Marina. Managers from each business and department will be on site doing open interviews and fulfilling jobs that day! Training will start soon after hiring to get a jump-start on the 2025 season. Please note the job postings will not be available online until the week of the job fair. Applications will also be on site and all hires are contingent upon a clean background check and must be able to provide documentation to establish identity and employment authorization. Big Earl has been a staple at the world famous Flora-Bama for over 25 years. Every Friday and Saturday night in the Dome, belly laughs echoed all the way down to the beach, bushwackers flowed freely and inhibitions became non-existent. The memories that have been made over the years from this 4 hour set of musical and comedic genius each weekend will live forever in the hearts and minds of thousands of customers and most certainly in the walls of the Flora-Bama.

This weekend, the Flora-Bama bids farewell to an icon and an amazing group of entertainers. Big Earl and The Sexual Biscuits will forever own the Dome stage, and though our hearts are heavy in their departure, we are overwhelmingly grateful for the unforgettable memories and experiences over the years. The Bushwacker Celebrates 50 Years

50 Years of Frozen Perfection

Another year, another milestone and it's a big one for this historic honky tonk. The beach bar's signature drink and crowd favorite, the bushwacker, is turning the big 5-0 in 2025! While we celebrate this creamy, delicious, adult milkshake beverage daily, turning 50 is something to commemorate with an extra cherry on top.

1975 is credited as the creation of this frozen masterpiece at Ship's Store, Sapphire Pub at Sapphire Village in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. The original recipe called for Vodka, Kahlua, Dark Crème de Cacao, Coco Lopez (cream of coconut), a splash of Triple sec and milk that's spun in a blender with ice and topped with a grating of fresh nutmeg. As popularity has grown and the cocktail made it's way to Florida, recipes have been adapted and modified to included many variations of this tasty beverage. Thousands flock to Flora-Bama each year to get our famous, award winning bushwacker. What makes our bushwacker so iconic? Well, let's just say, what happens at Flora-Bama stays at Flora-Bama and that includes the recipe.....our lips are sealed.

Red Clay Strays Return to Orange Beach

The Red Clay Strays to Headline The Wharf in Orange Beach, AL

Local fan favorites, The Red Clay Strays have blown up over the past few years gaining national acclaim. Now headlining their own tour, they are returning to home base, playing a show in Orange Beach, Alabama at The Wharf Ampitheater this July. With so much demand, a second show has been added to the bill - July 3rd and 4th. They are bringing along some local friends as well with Muscadine Bloodline and Justin Jeansonne. The Gulf Coast is excited to welcome these bands back to town with a hometown show and fill the stands cheering and singing their songs.

The 40th annual Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival is returning to the Gulf Coast this week. The festival will feature nationally acclaimed songwriters in venues along the Florida / Alabama Gulf Coast from November 7th - 17th, 2024. The festival is an opportunity for seasoned and aspiring songwriters and musicians from all over the world to have their songs heard, and for the public to learn the stories behind the lyrics that only the song’s author can express.

Post Malone Visits Flora-Bama

As the official after party site for the Post Malone concert at The Wharf Amphitheater in Orange Beach on October 17th, the town was buzzing in hopes Post Malone would pop up at the famous honky tonk and customers would get to see him up close. With a packed house, phones ready, and drinks flowing, the crowd got exactly what they were hoping for as Post Malone in fact did show up at Flora-Bama! Malone hung out side stage and cheered on his band member, Chandler Walters, who played the Dome Stage before hopping up on stage with him to cover Zach Top's new song among others. The crowd went crazy and Malone was ever so gracious to anyone who wanted a photo or to engage in conversation. A night many will never forget as lifelong memories were made on the line.

Flora-Bama Hosts Hurricane Relief Drive & Songwriter Fundraiser Show

The Gulf Coast is no stranger to hurricanes. When one hits, especially storms as devastating as Helene and Milton, it takes communities coming together to support and rebuild. Flora-Bama hosted a hurricane relief drive to gather items for people in need such as non-perishable food items, bug spray, cleaning supplies, construction supplies, first aid items, pet food, water, tarps and so much more. Partnering with The United Cajun Navy allowed us to get these items to communities in North Carolina and Florida who need it most. Along with hosting this drive, Flora-Bama in conjunction with the Mark McBride Arts and Music Fund, hosted a songwriter event with Mike Nash and Will Kimbrough to raise additional funds. These musicians performed their songs to a full audience who purchased tickets as a donation to this fund. 100% of the ticket money was donated to the hurricane relief fund and a live auction was held to engage the crowd and encourage additional donations culminating with a total of $8054 on top of the items donated. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed, Mark McBride Arts and Music Fund for supporting, and The United Cajun Navy for partnering with us to deliver the items. Prayers are constantly flowing from the entire Flora-Bama team to the hurricane victims.

Flora-Bama's Beach a Cleanup Site for Alabama Coastal Cleanup

The state’s largest one-day volunteer coastal cleanup event, Alabama Coastal Cleanup, returns for its 37th year on Saturday, Sept. 21. Flora-Bama is a host site again this year, participating as one of 25+ locations for beach cleanup. The event runs from 8am to noon and all volunteers, residents, visitors and businesses are invited to join together in this community event to help clean Alabama's most valuable asset, our gorgeous beaches. Everyone who participates in cleaning the beach at Flora-Bama will receive a free meal from the Flora-Bama Oyster Bar. Over the years, 110,448 volunteers have participated in cleaning 6,939 miles of Alabama's coastline and removed 1,779,911 pounds of trash from the beaches and coastal areas. Flora-Bama Celebrates 60 Years of Good Times and Good Music

Perdido Key, Fla. – ( OBA ) – The legendary Flora-Bama Lounge, Package, and Oyster Bar marks its 60th anniversary, August 1, 2024. This milestone is not just a testament to the establishment's longevity but also a celebration of its rich history and enduring cultural significance on the Gulf Coast.

Founded in 1964 by Theodore “Ted” Tampary and his wife Ellen, Flora-Bama has grown from a small watering hole into an iconic landmark. Situated on the Alabama-Florida state line, the bar was envisioned as a unique venue that would attract both locals and tourists. Despite a mysterious fire delaying its original Independence Day opening, Ted and his sons, Constantine “Connie” and Anthony “Bubba,” persevered to open the lounge and package store on August 1, 1964.

In 1978, Joe Gilchrist bought the Flora-Bama from Tampary and in 1986 Pat McClellan came onboard as a co-owner of the iconic roadhouse. John McInnis and Cam Price joined the ownership team in 2011.

The Flora-Bama quickly became known for its welcoming atmosphere and camaraderie among people from all walks of life. Over the years, it has survived numerous challenges, including fires, floods, and hurricanes, always emerging stronger and more beloved by its patrons. The bar’s resilience is a symbol of the spirit of the Gulf Coast community.

Throughout its six decades, Flora-Bama has hosted various events that have become local traditions. The “Interstate Mullet Toss” and the “Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival” are just two of the many annual events that draw crowds from near and far. The bar also gained international fame when singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett immortalized it in song, highlighting its place in American music culture.

After Hurricane Ivan in 2004, the Flora-Bama underwent significant renovations to restore it to its former glory. These efforts ensured that the bar could continue to serve its loyal patrons and maintain its reputation as one of the "Best Beach Bars in the World."

As Flora-Bama turns 60, it remains a beloved institution, offering a unique blend of good times and great music as its legacy stands as a testament to the enduring allure of this Gulf Coast treasure.

Flora-Bama, the iconic Perdido Key honky-tonk where legendary musicians and beach bums alike party in harmony on the Florida-Alabama state line, made national news this week as one of the 27 bars included on the 2024 USA TODAY Bars of the Year list . The list was created by USA TODAY Network food writers across the country and includes everything from humble dives to high-end cocktail bars.

“I am thrilled and honored to see the Flora-Bama recognized as one of the best bars in the world. It’s incredible to witness patrons from all over the U.S. and world visit our establishment,” wrote Flora-Bama co-owner Cameron Price. “Over the years, musicians, entertainers, team members, and guests have come together here for unforgettable Good Times and Good Music, spreading the Flora-Bama spirit far and wide. Since opening our doors in 1964, we have remained a vibrant part of the community and look forward to continuing our legacy for the next 60 years and beyond.”

Flora-Bama Co-Owner Pat McClellan wrote, “Exceeds my expectations since I arrived here at this ‘5-Star-Honky-Tonk’ in 1964, but, extremely proud to be a part of a legacy that has endured so many generations!”

What makes Fl ora-Bama stand out?

What started out as a humble little Southern coastal honky-tonk in 1964 has become a massive must-visit attraction for a taste of live music, fresh seafood and annual events on the white sands of the Gulf of Mexico that pack in thousands of people.

The bar's laid-back, easy-going atmosphere has become the muse for songs by musicians like Kenny Chesney, who outlines the all-too-familiar experience of opening “a big old can of good times” to “unwind” at the famed beach bar in his song “Flora-Bama.”

“There’s ball caps, photographs, dollar bills and bras / License plates from every state nailed up to the wall," Chesney continues in the lyrics. “Spring breakers, heartbreakers, already getting’ loud. Talladega’s on the big screen, don’t it make you proud?”

In 2014, over 30,000 people packed the beaches to hear him perform, and Chesney’s love for bar is shared by fans and other musicians. The late singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffett was known for occasionally having a beer or two at the bar or even jumping up on stage for a surprise song.

Music is built into the bar’s heartbeat, whether it’s an acoustic set on the bar’s beach stage with patrons sipping on Flora-Bama Jama cocktails or an indoor full band with fans toe-tapping and swaying underneath a garland of abandoned bras.

Each fall, musicians come from around the world come to the Flora-Bama for the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival, the largest gathering of national and local songwriters performing on the Florida coast.

The Flora-Bama can be as rambunctious or family-friendly as you want it to be. You could stop by for a late-night spent making memories you probably won’t remember by the morning (but luckily captured in the hundreds of photo booth strips tacked to the wall for eternity) or for a kid-friendly bingo session, waterfront lunch or church service on Sunday morning held at the bar.

Many long-time patrons have fond memories they’ve accumulated since childhood, like watching a sun-soaked Santa Claus skydive onto the sandy beach during the annual Santa Drop every December.

What to order at the Flora-Bama?

You can’t leave without tasting a signature Bushwacker, one of the bars most traditional cocktails, a sloshy, boozy frozen milkshake that can come with in a souvenir plastic Flora-Bama branded Solo cup.

While it’s perfectly acceptable to come in with sandy flip flops and a cover-up to chow down some fresh oysters, there are also more elevated dining options to indulge in the Flora-Bama restaurants across the street.

At the Flora-Bama Yacht Club, you’ll get waterfront dining with chef-inspired plates in a non-intimidating, family-friendly fashion.

If you’re lucky, Flora-Bama Yacht Club executive chef Patrick Carter will be there to whip you up some of gumbo-infused Cajun dirty rice, sweet jerk-style Gulf shrimp skewers with mango slaw and vanilla rum butter, or Gulf Coast Crab Cakes with roasted red pepper aioli. While the bar has maintained its fame for over half a century, many will argue it’s not because of the cool entertainment, funky decorations, fun events or delicious food and cocktails – it’s the people that call it home that make it such a treasure.

Nashville Songwriter, Hillary Lindsey, Inducted into Songwriter Hall of Fame This Week

The Songwriters Hall of Fame’s 53rd Annual Induction and Awards Dinner took place Thursday night (June 13) in New York City.

The evening honored 2024 inductees Hillary Lindsey , Timothy Mosley (Timbaland) , Dean Pitchford , Bill Berry , Peter Buck , Mike Mills and Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and Walter Becker and Donald Fagan of Steely Dan. Each were saluted for the immeasurable impact of their songs.

Additionally, multi-award-winner Diane Warren received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award, and four-time Grammy winner SZA was given the Hal David Starlight Award. The night also followed the posthumous induction of legendary country songwriter Cindy Walker to the SHOF in a special tribute held at a SHOF Master Session in Nashville.

To honor Nashville-based hitmaker Hillary Lindsey, country superstar Carrie Underwood gave a powerful performance of the Lindsey-penned “Jesus Take the Wheel.” Underwood bestowed her with the title “the queen of modern Nashville songwriting,” and Keith Urban joined her on stage for the induction.

“Music has so much power. It can bring you to your knees and make you feel every single piece of your heart that is breaking. It can send an electric shock through you and make you feel more alive than you’ve ever felt,” Lindsey said in her speech. “It has been one of the biggest blessings in my life.”

The inductee performed a stripped-down medley of some of the songs she has written, with a rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Million Reasons” turning into a duet with Urban on “Blue Ain’t Your Color.”

Other performers and presenters included Trey Anastasio , The Bacon Brothers , Cary Barlowe , Andra Day , El Debarge , Missy Elliott , Jason Isbell , Nile Rodgers , Irving Azoff , Deniece Williams and Paul Williams .

Lindsey was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. Born in Washington, GA, Hillary Lindsey moved to Nashville in 1994 to attend Belmont University. During her senior year she signed her first publishing deal. In 2002 she celebrated her first #1 hit – “Blessed” by Martina McBride.

In 2005 Hillary scored Carrie Underwood’s first single from her first album – “Jesus Take The Wheel,” a multi-genre hit that earned the 2006 Grammy for Best Country Song, as well as the 2006 ASCAP Country Song of the Year, the 2006 NSAI Song of the Year and the 2005 ACM Single of the Year. Underwood has recorded nearly 40 of Hillary’s songs, including “So Small” and “Wasted.”

Other chart-toppers from Hillary’s pen are “American Honey” by Lady Antebellum, “A Little Bit Stronger” by Sara Evans, “Shotgun Rider” by Tim McGraw, “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town (which earned the 2015 Grammy for Best Country Song, the 2015 CMA Song and Single of the Year, the 2015 NSAI Song of the Year) and “Blue Ain’t Your Color” by Keith Urban (the 2017 CMA Single of the Year, the 2017 NSAI Song of the Year). Jimmy Buffett's Spirit Lives on at Flora-Bama

Jimmy Buffett may have passed away last September, but his spirit lives on forever at Flora-Bama. His loyal fanbase, the Parrot Heads, frequent the bar requesting the bands play "Margaritaville" and "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere" while they sip on their bushwackers and dance the day away living the care free lifestyle Buffett wrote about for so many years.

Buffett references Flora-Bama in his songs "Bama Breeze" and "Rag Top Day".

Longtime Flora-Bama musician, J Hawkins remembers a visit from Buffett back in the day. Hawkins was on break when a guy got on stage and started playing his guitar. Hawkins remembered, "I come back through the door and was getting ready to get a little upset. There was someone picking up my guitar and I didn't tell them they could do it. By the time I got to the stage Buffett turned around and I had a volume knob on my guitar, and I said, 'well here's the volume knob, since it's you I'll go ahead and let you play.'"

Buffett is not only a local icon, but a globally beloved character. The Wharf Ampitheater announced the Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett featuring the Coral Reefer Band tour is coming LIVE in concert on August 1st to Orange Beach, AL. Jon Pardi Returns to the Gulf Coast

Jon Pardi's "Tequila Little Time" Music Video Filmed at Flora-Bama

Jon Pardi is no stranger to the Alabama Gulf Coast. In fact, the CMA and ACM award-winning artist has even recorded one of his top videos at the famous Flora-Bama. Pardi will be returning to the Gulf Coast to perform at The Wharf Ampitheater in Orange Beach, AL this fall on October 5th. Tickets are on sale now for purchase.

"Tequila Little Time" comes from a trip to California when Pardi made music, and memories, in a songwriting retreat with Luke Laird ("Hard To Forget," "Dirt on My Boots") and Rhett Akins ("What's Your Country Song," "I Lived It").

Background on the song, as co-writer Rhett Akins recalls it: "We'd sit in the garage in lawn chairs and drink beer and listen to the radio. It was like we lived in California and we were just teenagers starting a band."

They spent several days in the studio over one of Pardi's parents' garages, a facility dubbed Shelly's Deli because the singer's mom keeps guests supplied with sandwiches. They slept on air mattresses, wrote fairly steadily for three days and took a couple of trips in Pardi's 1978 Ford Bronco, with the burning scent of a nearby forest fire coloring their outdoor excursions.

Maybe Flora-Bama will get a glimpse of Pardi and his band come October at the Flora-Bama again, time will only tell, but the invitation always stands.

The Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo Returns as the "Funnest" Fishing Tournament on the Gulf Coast

Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo is fun for all ages!

No boat required in this ‘everyman’ tournament. In its 11 ^th year this family fun rodeo has prizes galore, three deep, in over 30 categories of ‘catch’ from game fish to pin fish to blue crabs. Registration is $25 for kids 12 and under and $50 for adults with all kids entered automatically going into drawing for jon boat, trailer and motor. A portion of proceeds go to the Pensacola VFW. Tickets may be purchased online at fishflorabama.com.

Tickets can be purchased up until June 6 ^th at 11:59pm and fishing begins at midnight. The captain’s meeting will be held virtually via Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo’s Facebook page, Thursday, June 6 ^th at 6pm for any last minute questions. Wanting to up the stakes? Compete in any of our competitive divisions including Red Snapper Jackpot, King Mackerel Jackpot, Offshore Slam, Speckled Trout, and Trashcan Slam (adult and kids). Tossing Mullet for Charity

Mullet were thrown, money was raised, and a few special guests came to visit...

2024 marked the 40th Annual Interstate Mullet Toss at Flora-Bama. This annual event is always the last full weekend in April and sparks a tradition for many to throw a fish from Florida towards Alabama on the gorgeous white sandy beaches behind the world famous Flora-Bama. The toss spans over the three day weekend with categories for all ages and male and female. The course extends 200ft and this year the longest toss was thrown by Paul Noble measuring at 174 feet 10 inches. Now that's a throw! Over 45 bands played on the bar's stages throughout the weekend and the crowds came out to support this celebratory weekend. Over 2000 fish were thrown this year which allowed Flora-Bama to raise upwards of $30,000 for local charities. On Saturday, some special guests came to support the event from the University of Alabama including - Alabama Head Football Coach Kalen DeBoer, Alabama Head Basketball Coach Nate Oats, and Alabama football players Jalen Milroe, Malachi Moore, Ryan Anderson, and Jake Coker. The event is the largest weekend of the year for Flora-Bama and we look forward to seeing everyone next year, so save the date for April 25th - 27th, 2025.

Riley Green's Duckman Jam at Flora-Bama

Riley Green and Friends Tracy Lawrence, Drake White, Ella Langley and Jake Worthington Rock the Beach

This past weekend, Riley Green took to the beach behind Flora-Bama and brought along some of country music's finest to put on a two day beach concert festival filled with good times and good music. Friday, April 12th had Jake Worthington, Tracy Lawrence and Riley Green. Saturday, April 13th had Ella Langley, Drake White and Riley Green finish out the night. Crowds showed up early and stayed late to celebrate country music with their toes in the sand and drinks in their hand. This weekend marked the first Duckman Jam Riley Green has put on and Flora-Bama was the perfect location to host it. While the beach concert was going on, Flora-Bama still had their three stages inside going strong with live music all day and night. Worship on the Water kicks it off with our Good Friday church service on the Flora-Bama white sandy beach at 6pm on Friday, March 29th. Then, Sunday, March 31st on Easter Sunday, join us for one of our three church services at sunrise at 6:30am or the regularly scheduled 9am and 11am. Special Operations Warrior Foundation Fundraiser Raises Over $15,000 at Flora-Bama

Over $15,000 Raised with Flora-Bama's Beach Run/Walk 5K and Half Marathon

Saturday, March 16th, 2024 marked the 11th Annual Beach Run/Walk for America's Warriors. This race was created by Flora-Bama Co-Owner and former Army Ranger, Cameron Price, whose dream is to eventually get to a full marathon on the sand. Currently, the race is 100% on the sand with three options to participate. Registrants can sign up for the half marathon, 5K run or 5K walk. All three begin and end on the sand behind Flora-Bama with the half marathon running towards Florida and the 5k run/walk going into Alabama. Hundreds of people came out to join in on the race festivities and help support Special Operations Warrior Foundation. For this race, 100% of race registration fees are donated back to SOWF.

The Special Operations Warrior Foundation is an American tax-exempt 501 nonprofit organization founded in 1980 to provide college scholarships and educational counseling to the surviving children of American Special Operations personnel killed in the line of duty. This incredible charity supports children of fallen special operators who are killed in the line of duty. They take care of all of the children's educational and counseling needs from cradle to career.

Flora-Bama Is Alabama's Best Dive Bar, According To Our Readers

You don't become the Gulf Coast ’s most hallowed beach bar without a bit of divine intervention. “When you look at where God put the Flora-Bama , it’s in the middle of where all kinds of demographics gather—that’s what makes it special,” says co-owner and lifelong Alabama native John McInnis III. “You’d have fishermen and locals mixed with tourists, bikers, and military personnel from the [Pensacola Navy] base. All of a sudden, they were hanging out together in this little shack by a liquor store. That’s what it looked like in the late seventies and early eighties.”

Now in its 60th year, the destination’s siren call of live music, fresh oysters, and boozy milkshakes (known as Bushwackers ) attracts the same ragtag band of revelers it beckoned in its early years. But the snowbirds, spring breakers, and all the groups in between have one thing in common, says co-owner Cameron Price, an Army Airborne Ranger veteran who first visited the area as a grad student fleeing the Massachusetts winter: “Every single person who walks into the Flora-Bama wants to have a good time." And that’s not hard to do there—it's no wonder our readers voted Flora-Bama the best dive bar in Alabama in our 2024 South's Best awards.

What To Expect At Flora-Bama

You’ll see white sand between the floorboards, love notes penned on the walls in permanent marker, and a clothesline of ladies’ unmentionables strung above the dance floor (this is a dive bar, after all). Kids can enjoy the scenery till 6 p.m., and everybody else can hang around until they close at 2:30 a.m. On Sunday mornings, you can come back at 9 or 11 a.m. for church. At the Flora-Bama, everyone’s welcome, and for many folks, their first pilgrimage to this sprawling shack on the beach begets a second one—and maybe a hundred more after that.

The beloved dive has been a fixture on the Alabama-Florida line since 1964 (a couple of years after the states were connected by the Perdido Pass Bridge), when a local family built an unassuming package store there. The late Joe Gilchrist bought it in 1978 and transformed it into a live-music venue, recruiting country artists on the rodeo circuit to come down and play. Once Pat McClellan joined him as a partner in the mid-eighties, they began adding some of the bar’s signature events, like the annual Interstate Mullet Toss (people throwing fish in the name of charity, which raises thousands for area youth organizations each year) and the Frank Brown Songwriters’ Festival (the largest and oldest of its kind in the country, which brings in big names in music).

Overcoming Obstacles

Like most places that have good stories, the Flora-Bama has seen some tough times along the way. After Hurricane Ivan walloped the area back in 2004, there was nothing left of the original beachfront building. For about three years, the bar operated out of a collection of tents and trailers. But the faithful patrons still kept showing up. “You probably had close to a million people a year going through there and having the times of their lives,” says McInnis, who became a majority owner along with Price in 2009. “That’s love.”

They then built up the Flora-Bama again—this time constructing the rambling wooden shack 22 feet above flood level. Beyond that, they haven’t altered much. “Our goal was to make it better without changing it because it’s such an iconic establishment,” says McInnis. That means a continued commitment to supporting charitable organizations (they give to more than 30 groups annually, from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation) and a devotion to redefining hospitality, providing a welcoming spot for all kinds of sunseekers to gather season after season.

“You’re more a shepherd of the Flora-Bama than you are an owner of it,” says Price. “When you look at all the people who have made memories here over the years, that’s the magic of this place.”

Here's an article by Matt Wake with AL.com interviewing Riley about his career and upcoming beach concert at Flora-Bama.

Redoing a song for Riley Green's sophomore album that had just been on his debut was “a decision the fans kind of made,” Green says.

The latest version of “Different ‘Round Here,” from 2023 LP “Ain’t My Last Rodeo,” also features guest vocals from Luke Combs, a star country singer/songwriter contemporary of Green’s. The original was the title track of Green’s 2019 full-length bow.

Although it’s been streamed more than 63 million times on Spotify, the original “Different ‘Round Here,” a Southern rock-hued hometown anthem cowritten with Randy Montana and Jonathan Singleton, had never been a single. Another song from Green’s LP, pedal-steel-spangled heartbreaker “I Wish Grandpas Never Died,” 127 million streams and counting, blew up so big “Different ‘Round Here,” Green says, “kind of got pushed back.”

Still, fans gravitated to the title track of Green’s gold-selling debut, which also boasted the hit “There Was This Girl” and production by Dan Huff, a pop/rock session guitar ace for stars like Madonna, Whitesnake and Bob Seger turned A-list Nashville hit-maker for Faith Hill, Taylor Swift, etc.

Whenever Green played “Different ‘Round Here” at his shows, “fans reacted to it like it was a hit song,” Green says, “So I wanted to kind of shed new light on it and give it a second chance.

“And it worked out really great because I was going on a stadium tour with Luke Combs. I just texted him and asked if he wanted to be part of it and it worked out great – for both of us. It’s become a big song all over again and it’s been great to see and hear it get played on the radio.”

Things have been working out great in general for Green, who won Academy of Country Music’s New Male Artist of the Year Award in 2020, an accolade Combs took home the previous year.

Currently, he’s out on a headlining tour with country icon Tracey Lawrence and up-and-comer (and fellow Alabama product) Ella Langley . On Friday, the tour comes to Von Braun Center Propst Arena in Huntsville, Alabama. Complete tour dates at rileygreenmusic.com.

On a recent early afternoon, Green checked in for a phone interview from the porch of his lakeside place in his hometown, Jacksonville, Alabama. Edited excerpts below.

Riley, on this tour you’re headlining arenas and amphitheaters. What’s your spin on the arena country music show like?

Riley Green: Well, it’s finding a happy middle-ground between those tear-jerking emotional songs, that I tend to write a lot of, but also songs that make you want to hold your drink up in the air. And that’s kind of what we do with our show. There’s a lot of high-energy, tempo moments, -- songs like “There Was This Girl” and “Different ‘Round Here” -- and then there’s also some moments where I come out and sit on a barstool to play – songs like “I Wish Grandpas Never Died” or “Hell Of A Way To Go.”

So it’s a lot of that. It’s trying to find a way to keep that audience engaged – I think that’s with any genre. That’s what your job onstage is, to entertain the people who paid to come see you.

Who’s an artist outside of country music you listen to a lot?

I listed to a lot of different types of music. I grew up in the era of burnt CDs, you know, so we had all kind of different genres of music together in one spot, and I guess that’s what streaming is now.

I was a huge classic rock fan growing up. Being from Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of those bands, and I think probably from a creative standpoint, listening to bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd or Marshall Tucker Band , stuff like that, musically you can get some ideas that were a little bit interesting to the country music world. Keep things from getting monotonous and sounding the same and the same three chords, you know.

There was a lot of musical creativity during that era, in the ‘70s and ‘80s, in classic rock that was probably more like country today.

Your recordings sound current and fresh, yet there’s also classic country instrumentation like fiddle and pedal steel. How do you find the right balance of roots and contemporary?

I think that’s the constant battle and probably the hardest part of my job I guess if you want to call it that, is finding a way to stay relevant and current to an ever-changing demographic and ever-changing musical tastes with a generation that’s … When I was playing in college bars at school, that was 10, 12 years ago.

So you still want to write about things that you know and kind of keep that kind of traditional sound in country music, the fiddle and the steel guitar and the dobro and the mandolin, but you also have to kind of change with the times a little bit too. So it’s a constant battle and a constant creative strain me and my producers have when we go in the studio.

You played quarterback at Jacksonville State University. If you were scouting Riley Green the football player back then, what’s his upside and what’s his downside?

Uh, I could always throw a football pretty well, so I’d say maybe my arm was my upside. But I think my biggest downside was trying to get my into a 7:45 [a.m.] class after staying out all night playing in the bars.

When you were coming up playing in the bars during college, what were a couple of the best gigs to play there? Was Brother’s [Bar] still a big place to play there then?

Brother’s was a good spot. There was a time period where everybody when through Brother’s. I mean, Hank Williams Jr., Marshall Tucker Band. Drivin’ N’ Cryin ’ used to play there all the time when I was in school. It had become slightly less popular when I was in school, but I definitely played there.

I played the Mexican restaurant in town, LocoMex, about twice a week for several years. Heroes, the Smoking Moose down in Anniston, Chestnut Station in Gadsden, I played all of those for a long time. I don’t know if they were the best gigs you could have but for me, I was pretty happy to have ‘em.

What was the moment that flipped the switch for you of wanting to write music and not just play music?

It was very gradual for me. I can remember my Grandaddy Buford was a huge music guy – loved Roy Acuff, Merle Haggard and George Jones – and when I’d go over to their house me and him would sit around and play an old guitar that he had.

I don’t think I ever had any dreams of being a musician. I was really into sports growing up, played three sports in high school.

And I think it [the desire to be a songwriter] came from me playing cover band gigs and just getting tired of playing the same covers every night, so I started trying to write songs that I thought would do well. And that was where I got a passion for songwriting. I think that probably even today trumps my passion for performing. I love writing songs and it’s never felt like work to me – it’s something that’s exciting.

For songwriting, do you have a particular guitar that you’ve pulled the most of songs out of?

Yeah, I’m kind of all over the place and I’ve got guitars strung out any place I might be staying, whether it’s the bus or Nashville or the beach or Jacksonville or … There’s a 1967 J-35 [Gibson acoustic] that I bought at a pawn shop five or six years ago, something about that old guitar, even how it smells that kind of reminds me of the old Epiphone my granddaddy had, it seems like you get a little bit of inspiration from that.

In April, you’re hosting your inaugural “Duckman Jam” a two-day country music festival at legendary beachside Pensacola, Florida hotspot Flora-Bama. The Flora-Bama has appeared in your song lyrics, too. What’s it like to have your own festival there now?

Man, I played down there every day on the beach under a tent from 12 to four for three weeks, during every college in the Southeast’s spring break. And I think those three weeks took 10 years of my life. [Laughs]

But I just cut my teeth down there. I learned so much about trying to win a crowd over, especially a tourist type crowd where new people are coming in every night. You really have to find a way to make yourself stand out.

And I just love that place, love that area, grew up going down there when I was a kid. So to be able to go and do two nights on the beach down there and invite some of my favorite artists to come open up the show, it’s awesome, man. It feels like a hometown show for me even though it’s five-and-a-half hours away from where I grew up.

When you first started experiencing real success in music, what’s the first major purchase you made.

Well, I built a house around 2017, but that was right before I signed a record deal, so I think I was able to afford that just because I did most of the work myself. I was still doing construction until about 2018 when I signed a deal.

But I think the most memorable purchase for me was buying my dad a truck. Nothing I bought myself stands out like as being able to hand him the keys to a nice truck, you know? He always had an old beat-up truck, so it was cool to be able to take care of him.

In recent months the Alabama Legislature has been considering the legalization of gambling within the State. Many local residents have been gambling for many years just by taking a short drive to the Flora-Bama or into Perdido Key. The current Mega-Millions drawing is valued over $550 Million dollars and you can view all the Alabama license plates on cars visiting the Flora-Bama Liquor Store or Gift Shop.

Since 1988 Gulf Shores and Orange Beach residents have been able to take a short drive to pick up a lottery ticket and maybe a bushwacker during their visit. An Orange Beach woman even won $2 Million there recently.

So as the weather warms up and the sun shines off the beautiful beaches, it may be time to take our ritual drive down Perdido Beach Boulevard and park just across the "the line." Grab a ticket or two, enjoy a Bushwacker or some oysters and relax on the beach. Until the State passes new legislation, they can always come visit our paradise and grab some lottery tickets during their visit.

Chili Cook-Off Teams Raise $12,000 for American Cancer Society

21 Teams Compete for Best Chili and Raise Money for American Cancer Society

Super Bowl is traditionally a large hang out at home day with people throwing parties full of creative snacks and grilling out. 30 years ago Flora-Bama started an event on the Saturday before Super Bowl to drum up some business and coined it the "Super" Chili Bowl Cook-Off. After 30 years, the event is still going strong and continues to be a crowd favorite. The tent stage area is maxed out at 21 teams each year and customers put their best "taste tester" hats on and come through trying all the different varieties. Tickets are $25 to have unlimited sampling and 100% of that money is donated to American Cancer Society. Teams compete for a blind taste test from our judges to win 1st - 3rd place, then all the customers vote on People's Choice and then to add to the fun a Best Decorated Booth is awarded to one of the teams. This year Flora-Bama was able to make a check out to American Cancer Society for $12,000!! Thank you to everyone who attended.

Santa Dropped in to Flora-Bama

Hundreds of kids came by Flora-Bama to see Santa himself as he dropped in to say hello to hundreds of kids this holiday season. Kids were also greeted by Buddy the Elf and Mr. Grinch himself in all his grumpiness. This kid friendly event is free to the public and kids get snacks, sweet treats, arts arts and crafts, live music, and pictures with Santa. Flora-Bama also partners with Toys for Tots on this event. Paddleboard and Beach Races to Kick Off an October Saturday

Flora-Bama hosted it's first Paddle Dash this past Saturday in Ole River. Participants brought their own boards and signed up for a two mile race to kick off their morning. The race began on the sand behind Flora-Bama Ole River Grill and went to the Ono Island bridge and returned to end at Flora-Bama Ole River Grill. Registration was free and all who entered received a t-shirt, plate of food and a free drink after the race. Winners for 1st - 3rd place in male and female also received a Flora-Bama gift card. On that same day, across the street at Flora-Bama, the USARA group (United States Army Ranger Association) hosted it's monthly meeting at Flora-Bama in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu. Rangers past and present honored those that fought and died on this historic day by running and walking one mile on the sand behind Flora-Bama. Many gathered just to cheer the runners on. This one mile movement is often referred to as the Mogadishu Mile or MOG Mile.

The Mogadishu Mile refers to a route that was run by American Rangers and Delta Force soldiers from a helicopter crash site during the Battle of Mogadishu on October 4, 1993. The Americans involved were part of Task Force Ranger. The Battle of Mogadishu is also known as the Black Hawk Down incident.

Stein Hoisting, Polka Music, and German Food Make Flora-Bama Festive

October brings so many entertaining events to Flora-Bama and Oktoberfest is a crowd favorite. Customer Appreciations kick back off in October and go through February with the second Sunday of each month being the event day. Customer Appreciations give guests 1 free drink, 1 free plate of food, and 25% off in the gift shop during the event. The kick-off to these is Oktoberfest themed in October and this weekend was nothing short of a full blown party. Guests of all ages came in full costume and sported all their lederhosen and dirndl outfits. Guests competed in a stein hoisting competition put on by Sam Adams Lager, followed by live music with The Brats, a lively polka band and dining on traditional German food like German potato salad, bratwurst, pretzels and beer cheese. Save the date for next year. The second Sunday of October will bring out the Oktoberfest theme again.

Jimmy Buffet Parrot Heads Celebrate Life at Flora-Bama

MOTM (Meeting of the Minds) is the PHiP (Parrot Heads in Paradise) convention held annually during the end of October and beginning of November. While previously hosted in New Orleans and Key West, the new home of MOTM has moved to the Gulf Coast and headquartered in Gulf Shores, Alabama for 2023 from October 24th - October 29th. It is open to any member of a PHiP sanctioned Parrot Head Club covering several days and nights of friendship, fun, food and great music, with a few optional meetings and seminars thrown in the mix.

With Jimmy Buffet's passing on September 1st of this year, the Parrot Head fan base is still mourning the loss of such a beloved cultural icon and will be for many years to come. Buffet created a lifestyle that spoke to his fans in a way that created a loyal following who shared the same free spirit, sense of adventure and a laid back lifestyle he sang about in every song.

Flora-Bama hosted Horse Soldier Bourbon and Will Summers in the Tent on September 12th for a one of a kind experience.

About Will Summers: Will Summers is a retired U.S. Army Infantry Officer and served as a member of the 82nd Air Borne Division and Special Forces. Will was a member of the ODA 595 Special Forces team that was the first to land in Afghanistan in response to the attacks on our country on 9/11. Their historic and unconventional warfare experience earned them the moniker, “The Horse Soldiers”, and has been brought to life in the Hollywood film, “12 Strong”, as well in other numerous leading books and documentaries. Today Will is a Brand Ambassador for the international award-winning ultra-premium Horse Soldier Bourbon brand.

Guests received a signed bottle of Horse Soldier Bourbon, hors d'oeuvres, and listened to a 90 minute presentation of Summers' first hand account of his experience in Afghanistan after 9/11. Bulls on the Beach rang in it's 10th year with a bang this past weekend at Flora-Bama. This high energy rodeo is family friendly and exciting for all ages. After a record breaking three day sellout, Flora-Bama raised $14,500 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This event has become an annual staple for many people along the Gulf Coast each year. Tickets are put on sale July 4th weekend and the event always takes place the first weekend after Labor Day. September at Flora-Bama kicks off with a festive Labor Day weekend and continues with a bunch of fun events. Saturday, September 2nd at 3pm is our Miss Flora-Bama Bikini Contest Finale. This brings all the ladies who placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any of our previous contests this year - Miss Mullet Toss, Miss Memorial Day, or Miss Firecracker, back to compete for the grand finale and to win the title of Miss Flora-Bama 2023 and $5000!

The following weekend kicks off with our annual Bulls on the Beach September 7th-9th. This is an adrenaline filled event with three nights of bull riding. Flora-Bama's Girls With Guitars Raises $7,846 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Flora-Bama and 95KSJ partnered to bring "Girls with Guitars" to the Flora-Bama bar on the beach and raise money for the kids of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Every ticket purchased got the guests a one of kind event t-shirt and 100% of ticket sales went directly to childhood cancer research at St. Jude. Patrons were thrilled with the high energy show put on by all the females and danced to their hit songs while helping such a good cause. Jenna McClelland opened the show and then Kylie Morgan, Kassi Ashton and duo Tigirlilly Gold hit the stage together to wow the crowd. The night's event raised a total of $7,846 bringing the total year to date for the St. Jude Concert Series to $21,572. Past concerts for the year that contributed to the donation were Easton Corbin, Shane Profitt, and Neon Union. It's an honor to partner with 95KSJ and be able to continue raising funds for such a worthy cause.

Kassi Ashton: With a little bit of rock, a hell of a lot of soul, and a throwback R&B groove, Kassi Ashton has crash landed on country radio. “Dates In Pickup Trucks,” her irresistible debut radio single dropped in February, on the eve of her own 28th birthday. “It feels powerful,” she says of the moment’s alignment. Speaking about the song’s playfulness, she adds, “I want it to show that there are many sides to me.”

The release marks the critical next step for the buzzy young singer. Named to Ones to Watch lists by publications like Huffington Post and The Tennessean as well as juggernaut radio personality Bobby Bones, Ashton spent 2019 as one of the openers on Maren Morris’s GIRL World Tour. In 2018, she was featured on Keith Urban’s CMA Album of the Year-nominated LP, Graffiti U.

The simmering new song, it turns out, has a surprising origin story: an uncharacteristically giddy phone call between Ashton and her grandmother. One of nine children and known for her take-no-prisoners attitude, the singer was shocked when, one day, her elder fell into a fit of giggles on the other end of the line. “She’s like, ‘Me and your grandpa went on a date last night,’” Ashton recalls. “‘I made dinner, we packed it up in the truck, and we drove around all the roads we hadn’t seen in a long time.’”

Ashton got to thinking about the nights she stepped out under the stars in her own pickup, back in her one-stoplight hometown of California, Missouri. Tigirlilly Gold: Sister duo Tigirlily Gold has been playing music together since they could walk, and officially formed their band in high school. Growing up, they crisscrossed the mid-west, growing a fierce fan base and selling out amphitheaters across their home-state of North Dakota. After moving to Nashville, they landed a weekly residence at Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row on Nashville’s famed lower Broadway. Playing four-hour sets, three to four nights a week, the sisters developed a performance style that’s not only captivating and fun but shows just how much entertaining is in their blood.

After releasing their original song “Somebody Does,” in 2021, the track topped the iTunes chart and Tigirlily Gold was signed to Monument Records. They released their self-titled, debut EP in July 2021, working with multi-Grammy Award Winner Shane McAnally, and hit the road with artists Walker Hayes and Ashley McBryde.

Now, the powerhouse duo has embarked on a new musical chapter with their latest EP, Blonde – a deeply personal record that includes poignant tales of love and loss alongside powerful anthems and songs of female empowerment. The first release off the EP, “Shoot Tequila,” came out in January and has already found viral success with over 60 million views on the song across social media. The Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo is one of the "funnest" fishing tournaments on the Gulf Coast. A lot of work goes into creating this family fun rodeo each year and we love being a part of the community. Get to know one of our team members, President Angelo DePaola.

The Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo is one of many events put on by the Flora-Bama each year and is a large community tournament for the whole family to come and enjoy. If you're looking for something to do in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach or Perdido Key, this tournament has something for everyone. Get to know our Fishing Rodeo President, Angelo DePaola, with our interview below. Save the date for our 2024 event - June 7 and 8th.

How did you get involved with the Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo?

John McInnis and I grew up on Mobile Bay together while his family was rebuilding the Dauphin Island Bridge. When that project was complete, they moved back to Montgomery. We reconnected at the University of Alabama and began fishing together, and we loved fishing the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. Fast forward a few years, and John’s becoming the one of the owners of the Flora-Bama. He called me one day and said, “We should start something like the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo on the Baldwin County side.” I thought it was a great idea, and the rest is history.

How long have you been involved?

This year marks 10 years. In the beginning I was heavily involved—creating the categories, developing the rules, procuring sponsorships, and even lining up our first weigh station. We’ve come a long way since those days. Now, the team at the Flora-Bama does all the heavy lifting. I just show up to run the weigh station and do awards.

What is your background and what do you currently do?

I’ve fished as far back as I can remember. I have a degree in marketing and advertising from Alabama, but I’ve always been in some sort of sales role. For the past 10 years, I’ve been selling real estate along the Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast.

What’s your favorite part about the Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo?

I love getting to see all the fishermen and women every year. I’ve become friends with many of them, and they are always so grateful for the team that puts on the FBFR.

Do your kids enjoy fishing and participating?

My kids love to fish, but they unfortunately don’t usually get to participate in the rodeo. I hope that in the coming years, I’ll be able to get them out and fishing before the scales open.

Where do you see the Fishing Rodeo in ten years?

I believe that the Gulf of Mexico and its waterways are the biggest asset of Baldwin and Mobile County. That coupled with the growth in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Baldwin County in general will fuel the participation of the FBFR. It’s tournaments like these that got me into fishing. There was nothing like the FBFR in the area until we came along. If we want to introduce the next generation to fishing, the value one learns from it, and the joy that comes from sharing the outdoors with family and friends, then the FBFR is of utmost importance.

What other community events are you involved with?

Being a realtor has given me and my wife the opportunity to be very involved in our local community. April has been the president of Coastal Conservation Association, chair of Art for Heart, and president of the Pleasure Island Junior Women’s Club. I served two years as president of the Mobile Big Game Fishing Club, and I’m still actively involved in the club. This year, I chaired the Gulf Coast Masters. I’m also a past board member and treasurer of the Billfish Foundation. I feel so blessed by all the doors that being a fisherman has opened for me. I attribute fishing, along with my affiliation to the Flora-Bama, to my success as a realtor.

What makes the Fishing Rodeo unique?

In terms of categories, prizes, and the cost to enter, there is nothing like it on this side of Mobile Bay. It’s an “every man” tournament in a world of high dollar marlin tournaments. That’s why John dubbed it the “most fun fishing rodeo”, because that’s what it’s about. It’s about community, competition, and comradery, and will fuel the future generations of fishermen and women in our part of the world.

I feel so blessed to be a part of the Flora-Bama team that second weekend in June.

Flora-Bama's Deep Roots On The Gulf Coast

It’s been nearly 60 years since the Flora-Bama got its start on the Alabama-Florida line. The business has undergone ownership changes and major additions but has kept an atmosphere of comradery and love for others. Ask anyone who has been to the Gulf Coast and they have heard of the Flora-Bama.

Hearing about the bar is one thing, but going offers beachgoers an experience like no other. John McInnis, III is one of the current owners of the famous beach honky-tonk. Along with Joe Gilchrist, Pat McClellan, and Cameron Price, McInnis has worked hard to ensure the Flora-Bama stays true to its roots and people.

Those roots go back to 1964 when the Tampary family opened the Flora-Bama Liquor Store following the construction of the Perdido Pass Bridge. The family sold the store to Joe Gilchrist in 1978. With his love for people and music, the location began transforming into the legendary beach bar now known nationwide.

Gilchrist “added a room on the back of it, which would be known as the ‘main room,’” McInnis explained. “He put a little bar and a stage back there and he invited a friend that was playing in the area, who was Jay Hawkins, to come back there and play. People would come in and the area was growing, but there wasn’t a whole lot down here at that point.”

Word got around, and soon visitors from all walks of life stopped in to enjoy music and meet new friends at the Flora-Bama.

The Flora-Bama exterior as seen from Perdido Key Drive. “You had people from all over the place walking in and listening to the music,” McInnis added. “It started a feeling of comradery and fun that helped the Flora-Bama turn into what it is today.”

In 1986, Navy veteran Pat McClellan joined forces with Gilchrist, bringing even more excitement to the Flora-Bama.

“He was the one that started adding the tents out back and brought more events to the Flora-Bama,” McInnis said. “He added the Bama Dome area and started coming up with all of these wild and crazy events.”

Gilchrist passed away in May 2022. The remaining three owners are focused on continuing his legacy. “We still have Pat McClellan and he’s happily participating at the Flora-Bama. He is still one of our characters that make the place what it is. He’s just a big, tall, strong, loving guy who loves people and loves life and is always the life of the party. He loves seeing people not only have a good time, but he treats people with love and respect.”

Music has always been a thread in the fabric of Alabama, so the list of performers has only grown over the years, and the Flora-Bama now has several stages. The beach bar books over 3,500 musicians annually, and an estimated two million customers enjoy the atmosphere.

“We have what we call the main bar and our honky-tonk on the beach and then across the street you have the Flora-Bama Yacht Club Restaurant, the Ole River Grill, the Flora-Bama Marina and the Flora-Bama liquor store,” McInnis said. “They all grew out of an area that all of the musicians lived in for decades in their campers.”

One of the most well-known events, Mullet Toss, brings over 30,000 people annually. The event started in 1986 when Gilchrist and McClellan were bored on the beach.

“They were bored and they had nothing to do and Jimmy Lewis played the rodeo circuit,” McInnis explained. “He said when they were bored at the rodeo, they would throw cow chips for distance. They didn’t have cow chips, but they did see a dead fish on the beach, so that’s where that came from.”

Whether you are part of a massive event such as Mullet Toss or you visit on a Tuesday afternoon, McInnis said you could expect to have the time of your life, an experience you won’t forget.

“They can expect the unexpected,” he said. “My partner Joe used to say, ‘we thank you for lowering your expectations.’ And when you do that and you walk in, you know, it’s a big old shack and so, there’s nothing pretentious about it.”

The location became a shining mark on the map in 2014 when country music superstar Kenny Chesney released his song “Flora-Bama.”

“There’s ball caps, photographs, dollar bills, and bras,” he sang. “License plates from every state nailed up to the wall.”

Jimmy Buffett, Luke Combs, Jon Pardi, and Riley Green are other high-profile names with connections to Flora-Bama. Some Flora-Bama staples include Jay Hawkins, Rick Whaley, and Jack Robertson.

"Certainly, I didn't want to be the guy that screwed up the Flora-Bama," said McInnis. "A lot of people focus on money and the business side of it first but … at the end of the day, if you focus on making sure people have the best time of their life, and they're treated with respect, and they give you respect in return, and they stay safe doing it, and they have a great time, then the business side of it takes care of itself."

When you're ready to kick back, have a cold one, try some oysters and enjoy music, you are more than welcome at Flora-Bama.

"Come as you are, relax and listen to music and I would say most importantly, meet other people that are from all over the place, that are from all walks of life," McInnis suggested. "I think if you do that you will end up meeting people that you otherwise wouldn't have hung out with because they're different. And you find that you actually have a lot in common and you make some lifelong friends to take with you."

2023 Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo: One to Remember

In my job, I am lucky to be the emcee/host of some of the most prestigious big game fishing tournaments here on the Gulf Coast. These events feature millions of dollars in prize money on the line and multi-million dollar yachts captained and crewed by some of the best fishermen in the world.

It's an exclusive sport, for sure. The investment of time and money to fish these tournaments is often a reflection of a very successful businessperson who rewards themselves with being able to pursue their passion of big game fishing with family and friends. Heck, even the fish targeted are exclusive! Only four fish in the entire Gulf will win you money. Billfish, Tuna, Mahi-Mahi, and Wahoo.

But that same offshore community is also friendly, generous, and welcoming, even to someone who grew up in the cornfields of Illinois! I love being a part of that community and have made many great friends through the sport of 'Marlin Fishing.'

Also, in my job, I feel very fortunate to be the Flora Bama Fishing Rodeo emcee. It is everything that a big game fishing tournament is not, and it's that way for all the right reasons. Much like its namesake, it's inclusive to everyone. It's about the community, it's about fun, and it's about families, also like its namesake.

Anyone can buy a ticket and have a chance to win a prize in one of 40 categories! Kids. Adults. Those with boats. Those who want to fish from a dock, a bank, or a jetty. And the first-place prize for the blue crab that weighed less than a pound is the same as for the twenty-five-pound first-place Red Snapper.

From the first year of the tournament to this year's tenth anniversary, the main focus has always been on the kids. It always has been, and it always will be. For many kids, it's their first time to fish in a tournament. It's the first time they have ever weighed in a fish and heard their name called as "The new Leader in the Flora Bama Fishing Rodeo!" as they celebrate with their parents, siblings, and friends. And those who place in the top three spots in each category win some fantastic prizes!

The most coveted award at the rodeo is the 'Master Angler Award' given out to the top Adult and top Junior Angler each year. This year's Master Junior Angler was a boy named Lawson Haddock. Lawson has to deal with some physical challenges at his young age, more than most of us will ever face in our lifetimes. But that didn't stop him from placing first in the White Trout and the Stingray categories giving him the most points among all junior anglers.

I've learned in nearly two decades of the fishing tournament business is that it's not truly about winning half a million dollar check or even super cool kayaks for kids. Even if, at that moment, it feels like that's exactly what it's all about. But it's not. The actual winning is the memories made. Money will be spent, and the kayaks will eventually be gone too...but those memories, those are forever.

I'm sure Lawson and his parents will never forget him being honored as this year's top junior angler. All of us on the event staff and the couple hundred people in the crowd all cheered and gave him a standing ovation for his tremendous accomplishment. Yet none of us appreciate how we take the ability to stand up for granted every day.

I hope the Haddock family always remembers the gift Lawson gave all of us that day. We all were gifted a precious memory because Lawson included us in his special day.

The Flora Bama Fishing Rodeo is the 'Funnest Tournament' on the Gulf Coast because it's for anyone. But more importantly, it's also for everyone out there like Lawson.

Kenny Chesney and No Shoes Nation!

Kenny Chesney is in town for two concerts at the Wharf. During his visit he took a break and visited the Flora-Bama .

Flora-Bama's Beach Run Walk for America's Warriors Raises $11,854 for Special Operations Warrior Foundation

1/2 Marathon & 5K Benefitting Special Operations Warrior Foundation

Flora-Bama hosted it's 10th Annual Beach Run/Walk for America's Warriors this past Saturday, March 18th, 2023. 100% of race registrations for this event go to Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

SOWF ensures complete post-secondary educational support and additional educational opportunities “cradle to career,” for eligible surviving children of fallen Special Operations Personnel and children of all Medal of Honor Recipients; and provides immediate financial assistance to severely wounded, ill, and injured Special Operations Personnel — today and in the future.

Race participants ran on the beach behind Flora-Bama opting to either run a 1/2 marathon towards Florida or a 5K towards Alabama. Post race, Flora-Bama hosts the after party with live music, food and drinks, along with an awards ceremony. Each year a family is honored and their loved one who lost their life is remembered. This year our race was dedicated to Captain Richard "Richie" Cliff. Read his bio below:

CLIFF, Richard Capt. Richard G. Cliff, Jr., 29, of Sanford, NC, was killed September 29,

2008, while conducting a combat reconnaissance patrol in the vicinity of Yakhchal,

Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of combat operations while serving with

Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). He deployed in support

of Operation Enduring Freedom in September, 2008, as a member of the Combined

Joint Special Operations Task Force Afghanistan. This was his third deployment in

support of the Global War on Terror and his first deployment to Afghanistan.

Captain Cliff was a Special Forces Operational Detachment - Alpha Team Commander.

Cliff was a native of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and graduated from Wando High School in

1997. He was commissioned in June, 2002, after graduating from Appalachian State

University in Boone, NC.

At Appalachian State Richie was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and ROTC.

Richie began his military career at Ft. Benning, GA, where he completed the Infantry

Officer Basic Course. His first assignment was Ft. Lewis, Washington, where he was a

platoon leader with the 5th Battalion 20th Infantry Stryker Brigade Combat Team. He

deployed with them to Iraq in 2003, and again in 2006, as a company Executive Officer.

Cliff then went to Ft. Benning, GA where he completed the Maneuver Captains Career

Course. He began the Special Forces Qualification Course June, 2007, and he earned

the coveted Green Beret in July, 2008. Cliff's military education includes the Maneuver

Captains Career Course, Infantry Officer Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and

Escape Course, Basic Airborne Course, Ranger Course, and Special Forces Qualification

Course. Richie also became bilingual, learning Spanish while at the Qualification Course.

His awards and decorations include four Army Commendation Medals (one for valor),

the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan

Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary

Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the

Overseas Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge,

the Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab and the Special Forces Tab.

In his spare time Richie was an avid surfer with his favorite local spot being Folly Beach.

He traveled to Costa Rica, Hawaii and surf spots up and down the Atlantic and Pacific

coasts. He enjoyed days spent on his boat, wakeboarding with friends, and hitting the

slopes with his brother, Eddie. Richie also climbed to the summit of Mt. Rainier in

Washington state while stationed at Ft. Lewis.

Richie loved life and enjoyed every day to the fullest. He had an amazing sense of

humor, always playing practical jokes on his friends. His laugh was so infectious and

luckily for those around him, he laughed a lot. Richie made friends with ease, becoming

friends with everyone he met. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone. He was

driven to succeed and excelled at every endeavor. His friends describe him as loyal and

kind, a born leader.

Cliff is survived by his wife, Stacy Wagoner Cliff, who he married in August, 2003; an

infant son, Richard Sanders Cliff, born September 4, 2008, both of Sanford, NC; his

parents Julie and Rich Cliff, Sr.; and a brother, Eddie Cliff, all of Mount Pleasant, SC;

uncles, George Cliff and wife Linda of Columbus, GA, Bill Cliff and wife Penny of

Thomaston, GA, Brownie Sanders and wife Brenda of Charleston, and Edward Sanders

and wife Susan, of Charleston, SC, several cousins and many friends.

Flora-Bama Raises Over $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

95KSJ presented Easton Corbin at Flora-Bama on Thursday, March 16th to a sold out crowd on the Tent Stage. Crowds sung along to Corbin's hit songs, "I'm A Little More Country Than That", "All Over the Road", "Roll With It" and "Marry That Girl". Concert attendees purchased tickets and 100% of the ticket sales went back to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for a total of over $10,000 raised Thursday night.

The mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Super Chili Bowl Cook-Off Raises $12K for Charity

This past Saturday, Flora-Bama hosted the annual "Super" Chili Bowl Cook-Off which is always held the Saturday of the Super Bowl weekend. 19 teams competed to raise funds for American Cancer Society and bragging rights for next year. Hundreds of people came out in the rain to enjoy chili, dance the day away w/ live music and support such a wonderful cause. Enthusiasm and Team Pride Filled the Room

Every year the college football season culminates with a game very important to two Flora-Bama Owners, Pat McClellan and Cameron Price. Mclellan served in the Navy and Price, a West Point graduate, served as an Army Ranger. Both owners had a vision to bring as many Army and Navy men and women together to celebrate the game together in the Main Room at Flora-Bama. What started as a fun idea has now turned into a gathering filled with tons of participation, immense enthusiasm, and a whole lot of respect for everyone in the room. Saturday kicked off with a live broadcast from The Next Round Live, an online broadcast that delivers the latest sports news, humor, and entertainment. As the room filled nearing kick-off, the energy was contagious throughout. The room stood for the National Anthem, sang their own schools alma mater, and watched the game from start to finish cheering on their respective teams. A game that delivered on multiple overtime excitement, the room remained filled to the very end. With hosts, multiple TV's, a big screen, raffle prizes, a food buffet and more....after this year, it was solidified, there is no better place to watch the Army vs. Navy game each year. We look forward to seeing you next year!

Santa Drops in to say hello to everyone at Flora-Bama

Flora-Bama had a big treat this past weekend with a visit from Santa Claus! The annual Santa Drop had Santa parachute in and land on the beautiful white beach behind Flora-Bama as hundreds of kids scream with excitement watching him float in. The event happens every December, has live music, arts and crafts, sweet treats, and pictures with Santa. This event is perfect for the family and is free to everyone who attends. We partner with Toys for Tots as well and every person who brings a toy for the fundraiser gets a free drink card to redeem at one of the bars (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Professional Bull Riding Raising Money for Charity

Flora-Bama put on its 9th Annual Bulls on the Beach event September 9th, 10th and 11th. 1200+ fans a night came to watch this adrenaline filled competition where adults and juniors ride bulls to compete for the champion spot. Always a family favorite, the first night of the event each year, children compete in a coloring contest where a bike for a boy and a girl is given away. This year's winners were just as excited and ran to the stage grinning from ear to ear to redeem their bicycles. The stands remained full while the crowd was wowed by the cowboys grippin' for as many seconds as possible. As we say each year, we will sell you the seat, but you'll only need the edge. To top it off, this event is a fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital so a portion of the proceeds from the event are donated and aid in helping cure childhood cancer. This year's event donated over $11,000 to the kids of St. Jude! Be on the lookout for next year's event. Bulls on the Beach is always the first weekend after Labor Day. Joe Nichols partnered with 95KSJ and the Flora-Bama to put on a show for the kids of St. Jude Children’s Hospital. He performed to a sold-out crown on Wednesday, June, 15 ^th on the Flora-Bama Tent Stage, and raised $11,000 dollars with all proceeds going to St. Jude. The mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. On April 29th, the Flora-Bama hosted the Merrill Marauders Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony honoring Gabriel "Gabe" B. Kinney. What a once in a lifetime event to be a part of and a true privilege to witness this incredible moment in history. The ceremony was filmed for a future release date to combine different elements and recipients for a full length virtual ceremony.

Mullet Toss 2022 Was A BLAST!!

The fish were flyin', the drinks were flowin', and the party kept on goin'. Flora-Bama hosted our 37th Annual Interstate Mullet Toss this weekend and it was one for the record books. Over the course of the weekend an estimated 30,000 people flowed through the entertainment venue and watched people toss fish from Florida towards Alabama. The three day event consists of live music all day and night, bikini and hot body contests, crawfish boil and of course tossing some fish. All of the money raised for tossing fish gets donated back to local charities in the community, so you are competing for a good cause. FLORA-BAMA AND JOHN RICH, THOMPSON SQUARE, JEFFREY STEELE RAISE OVER $105,000 FOR FOLDS OF HONOR

Sunday, March 13th John Rich performed on the Flora-Bama Tent stage with his friends Thompson Square and Jeffrey Steele to raise awareness and funds for Folds of Honor. The evening consisted of two ticketed seated shows and included live auction elements during the performance with signed guitars, signed Redneck Riviera Whiskey bottles and personalized VIP performances with Mr. Rich himself. Each show performed to a sold-out crowd and people were very generous with their time and funds to support such a meaningful cause. With both shows combined, Flora-Bama and John Rich were able to raise over $105,000!

Folds of Honor’s provides scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service members. Through this organization, Folds of Honor is able to honor their sacrifice and educate their legacy. Along with educational funding, they supply a lasting support system for the families throughout their lives and ensure they are taken care of.

Between ticket sales and some auction items, we raised $80,000 for childhood cancer. Learn More About Flora-Bama Support For Military Veterans

In times of conflict, our nation’s service members put their lives on the line. Flora-Bama , an iconic Gulf Coast roadhouse that has straddled the Alabama and Florida border for more than 50 years , works tirelessly to ensure that their service is always remembered. “Our love for military personnel and their families continues FloraBama’s historic legacy of actively supporting the local communities and military on both sides of the state line,” says Cameron Price , a co-owner and a West Point- and MIT-educated former infantry platoon leader. Each year, Flora-Bama hosts more than 25 events that typically raise more than $100,000 for military support groups as well as local organizations .

Given its proximity to several military bases and the region’s large veteran population, Flora-Bama’s connection to the military might seem natural, but it has evolved over time.

Flora-Bama started as a beachfront bar and package store , opening in 1964 on the new state line, which had shifted as the result of a land swap that facilitated the construction of the Perdido Pass Bridge. Joe Gilchrist purchased Flora-Bama in 1978. Pat McClellan , a former Naval public affairs and special services officer, came aboard in 1984 , and together they put Flora-Bama on the map as a renowned live music venue and event center.

In 2010, Price and his friend and business partner John McInnis , both with extensive experience in the construction industry, joined the ownership team. Today Flora-Bama includes two restaurants, as well as a liquor store, marina and yacht club.

Flora-Bama made history of sorts this year when it became the host of the first base in U.S. Army Ranger Association history to bear the name of a living ranger, Congressional Gold Medal recipient Gabriel Kinney, age 100 . A resident of Daphne, Ala., Kinney is the oldest of six known surviving members of the famed World War II Merrill’s Marauders, who marched through 1,000 miles of jungle in Myanmar (then Burma) to capture an enemy-held airfield. Kinney is also honored in the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, Ga . The first meeting at Flora-Bama was in February, and monthly meetings draw an average of approximately 40 rangers. “Because Flora-Bama is a legendary gathering place for active and veteran military, and the Army Rangers’ accomplishments are legendary, our partnership is a natural fit that supports and honors rangers in our region,” says base commander Chris Rivers .

Flora-Bama is also the unofficial home of Operation ReConnect . Founded in 2015 by Air Force Staff Sgt. Ryan Charrier , the nonprofit organization provides free weeklong family vacations on Alabama’s Gulf Coast to post-9/11 combat veterans. Homeowners and rental management companies in coastal Alabama and northwest Florida beach communities donate use of their properties. Other local businesses contribute food, gift cards, beach gear, boat rides and more to create a complete vacation experience. Since its founding, Operation ReConnect has hosted more than 300 military families.

GIVING BACK

Of all the events the entertainment complex hosts or supports, none is more unique than the annual Interstate Mullet Toss & Beach Party , where participants compete to fling mullet fish the farthest. Flora-Bama donates proceeds to various regional causes, including local Veterans of Foreign Wars posts and the National Chief Petty Officers Association at Naval Air Station Pensacola Corry Station . Doc Wallach , a former Navy special intelligence and reconnaissance operator, produces and acts as master of ceremonies for the event which, before the COVID-19 pandemic, attracted as many as 30,000 people. Attendees pay $15 to hurl a fish across the state line. The winner gets a T-shirt, and all tossed fish are donated to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo to feed the animals. Flora-Bama’s Beach Run-Walk for America’s Warriors each March raises funds for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides grief counseling, college scholarships and educational and career counseling to children of Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel killed in the line of duty.

The bar’s first Warrior Foundation fundraiser in 2014 honored Mike Tarlavsky , an Army Special Forces captain and team leader based in Fort Campbell, Ky. Tarlavsky and Flora-Bama’s Price were both infantry platoon leaders at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Later, Price was a groomsman when Tarlavsky married Capt. Tricia Fernandez, an Army veteran who served six years in the Medical Service Corps Branch. In 2004, Tarlavsky was killed during a mission in Najaf, Iraq, when the couple’s son, Joey, was 10 months old.

“The most important thing for us is to know that Mike will always be remembered, and Special Operations Warrior Foundation and Flora-Bama work to ensure that,” Fernandez says. “Our son is now a freshman in college, and they are still supporting us like they did when I was holding a baby in my arms and learned of our hero’s death.”

Paula Boyer-McNulty is also grateful to Flora-Bama. She and Delta Force Master Sgt. Mike McNulty were high school sweethearts who married after McNulty finished basic training at age 18. They had four teenage children when McNulty was killed in 2005 on his fifth deployment in Iraq. Price and McNulty served together in Hawaii, and they both represented the 25th Infantry Division in the 2001 Best Ranger Competition at Fort Benning. Flora-Bama honored McNulty during its 2017 America’s Warriors fundraiser. “Every day, Flora-Bama makes sure that our country’s heroes are never forgotten and everyone is always welcomed,” Boyer-McNulty says. “Flora-Bama fills a lot of voids in people’s lives.”

In 2019, Flora-Bama aligned with the Combat Diver Foundation to host the organization’s inaugural Deep Dive fundraiser. The ultimate goal is to build the Combat Diver Museum and establish a global community of active and veteran combat divers. The organization’s president, Lino Miani , reached out to fellow former combat diver Price to help realize these goals. “Our mandate is to preserve the history of the Combat Diver community as a whole,” Miani says. “That includes graduates of the Special Forces Underwater Operations School in Key West, Fla., as well as those across all services and nations that are highly trained in the art of traveling underwater to engage the enemy. We want to recognize this elite community because its history is global in scope.”

Attendance at the Flora-Bama Deep Dive fundraising events has grown from 16 in 2019 to 350 in 2021, and hundreds more participated in the virtual event . This year, the Deep Dive Memorial 5K beach run honored fallen Green Beret John M. Wirka Jr. Plans for Deep Dive 2022 include a combat diver reunion, a family and networking event, a motorcycle charity ride and a joint tactical demonstration showcasing combat diver capabilities across all branches of the military.

In March, Flora-Bama added yet another military organization to its fundraising efforts. A concert starring country music singer and songwriter John Rich of the duo Big & Rich was held in support of Folds of Honor, a group that provides educational scholarships to spouses and children of killed and disabled U.S. soldiers. “The ultimate way to say ‘thank you for your service’ is to look after military families,” Rich says. “Because Flora-Bama and I share that feeling, Flora-Bama is family to me. "We'd sit in the garage in lawn chairs and drink beer and listen to the radio," recalls Akins. "It was like we lived in California and we were just teenagers starting a band."

"Jon's mom breeds bulldogs, so in the garage connected to the house, there had to be about 15 or 20 bulldogs," says Laird. "Just the wildest thing. I know the bulldog Maren Morris has [Pancake], she bought it from her. I think a few different country stars have gotten bulldogs from Jon Pardi's mom."

ALABAMA NATIVE BRINGS HIS COMEDY BACK TO HIS ORGINS

Earlier this year, Whitmer Thomas crossed the rubicon every young comedian strives for. After years of grinding it out in Los Angeles and New York’s comedy club circuits, the 30-year-old Alabama native released his very own HBO special, The Golden One, in February. A disarming blend of music, comedy, and personal documentary, the hour-long special is an often funny, sometimes sad, and always engaging excavation of his personal history and hangups, with the traumatic loss of his mother functioning as its beating heart. Thomas’s mother, a musician whose success never equaled her ambition, passed away from alcoholism shortly after Thomas moved to L.A. to pursue a career in show business when he was just 18 years old. The trauma led him to shun alcohol and drugs for most of his adult life, which Thomas addresses in the song “Partied to Death,” the show’s cathartic highlight.

Filmed at the Flora-Bama Lounge, the Pensacola bar where his mother performed with her twin sister as Syn Twister, and directed by his best friend and longtime collaborator Clay Tatum, Thomas fills the special with tales that border on the horrific, like the time Thomas’s dad saved him from being abducted by a stranger. But through a warm delivery and non-threatening approach, Thomas manages to walk the line between tragedy and comedy with grace. Having honed his craft as a member of the skate-punk comedy group Power Violence, Thomas, who self-identifies as an “aging emo kid,” grew up idolizing Blink-182, which he once called “the ultimate parody band.” It made sense, then, to connect him with Blink bassist and vocalist Mark Hoppus, for a conversation about comedy, creative catharsis, and finally making it. —BEN BARNA

Justin Moore Concert at Flora-Bama

Country singer Justin Moore will kick off this year’s Flora-Bama Sunset Beach Concert Series in Pensacola, Florida. Moore will play the Flora-Bama Lounge located on the border Florida and Alabama over Labor Day Weekend, launching the beachfront series on Sept. 1.

The concert series features intimate performances from artists on the beach behind the famed bar. The show will start at 4 p.m. local time with support from fellow country star and Florida native Easton Corbin .

Moore’s Flora-Bama show will close out his spring and summer dates that begin on April 12 at Lot42 in Kitchener, Ontario. Moore will go on to perform in New York, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, New Hampshire, California and Maryland.
